PhD Studentship in School of Engineering at Cranfield University

A 3-year PhD studentship is available in the School of Engineering at Cranfield University. This is a unique opportunity to participate in a €70M European Project - Value Improvement through a Virtual Aeronautical Collaborative Enterprise (VIVACE). The consortium, led by Airbus, includes over 50 partners - all recognised names in the aerospace and IT industries.

Cranfield University plays a significant part in several work packages, most notably in Multidisciplinary Design & Optimisation (MDO). The work advances design and optimisation processes, tools and integration frameworks.

The studentship, depending on qualification and experience, includes thetuition fees at EU student level plus a maintenance bursary of up to £13Kper year for three years.

The candidates should have a UK 1st or upper 2nd class degree in aeronautical, space or mechanical engineering, excellent analytical,computing and communication skills, combined with the ability to deliver to a deadline. Experience of at least three of the following areas is essential: Aircraft/Aerospace design, mathematical and Object Orientated modelling and visualisation methods, probability and statistics, optimisation methods and tools; CAD/PDM/KBE. It is expected that the focus of the work will be on visualisation and interpretation methods for MDO.

The PhD candidate will be encouraged to further develop analytical and computational skills, work closely with the team members, and submit the results of work for publication in the academic literature. An original contribution to the field of knowledge is expected. After three years study the successful candidate will be well-prepared for a rewarding industrial or academic career.
